Function of NTC Temperature Sensor of Charging Gun

With the popularization of new energy vehicles, the concept of low-carbon travel has gradually gained popularity. 1. How the charging gun works

The essence of the portable charging gun is a "small charging pile", and its core task is to convert household alternating current (220V) into direct current suitable for electric vehicle batteries. The whole process relies on the collaboration of multiple key components:

Charging gun head: direct car charging port, responsible for the physical transmission of current;

Control box: acts as an "intelligent center", responsible for real-time regulation of current and voltage;

Power cord: One end is connected to the household power supply, and the other end is connected to the control box and the gun head to form an energy transmission link;

NTC temperature sensor: distributed in key parts such as charging gun head and control box, real-time monitoring of temperature to ensure safe operation.

In this link, the NTC temperature sensor acts as an invisible safety guardian, ensuring that the charging process will not cause accidents due to overheating.

 

2. The principle of NTC temperature sensor

The core features of NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) temperature sensor are: temperature rise, resistance value; Temperature, resistance values rise. Through this regular resistance change, it can capture the temperature situation inside the charging gun in real time and feed back the data to the control system.

In the charging process of new energy vehicles, NTC temperature sensors undertake crucial safety monitoring tasks, which are mainly reflected in the following aspects:

 

1). Real-time temperature monitoring: accurately capture every change

In long-term or high-power charging scenarios, the charging gun head and car socket will generate a lot of heat due to current transmission. The NTC temperature sensor is installed inside the plug of the charging gun and can quickly sense small changes in temperature.

These temperature signals will be converted into specific values and uploaded to the control module in real time to achieve millisecond-level monitoring to ensure that any abnormal temperature rise can be detected in the first place.

 

2). Multi-level security protection: layer by layer checks

When the sensor detects that the temperature exceeds the set safety threshold, the system will respond in stages:

Primary response (≈ 65 °C): automatically charge the current to reduce heat generation;

Intermediate protection: When the temperature continues to rise, the system will forcibly turn on the heat dissipation device to improve heat dissipation efficiency;

Ultimate defense (≈ 85 °C, the value specified in the national standard): Once the high-risk temperature is touched, the system will immediately trigger power-off protection, completely cut off the current, and avoid accidents from the source.
This graded protection mechanism ensures that the charging gun can operate safely in different scenarios.


3). Why does the charging gun have to rely on the NTC temperature sensor

Avoid high-temperature accidents: Overheating can cause gun wires to burn, plugs to melt, and even start a fire.

Prolong equipment life: Proper temperature control can improve the aging speed of the device and improve the service life.

Guarantee battery safety: Overheating not only endangers the charging gun, but may also affect the health of the battery and cause irreversible damage.

Compliance with industry standards: National and industry standards have clearly required charging equipment to have a temperature protection mechanism.
